Flash Fiction February 003: Mother Moon

by Terence A. Anthony

For eons, Mother Moon observed  her children from a distance, not knowing if she will ever meet them. That is until one day, a rocket flew into earth’s orbit, teasing her mankind’s future.

Patiently she took notice the many ways mankind tried to talk to her. Many fell short, many disappeared. Years passed by and little toys were left in orbit; presumably as little tokens from the human race signalling their intention to visit one day. Every few cycles, they came closer and closer.

Until one day, a rocket flew close by, visiting Mother Moon for the first time ever. Finally she got to see her children. Little creatures in white walking all over her skin. They prickled and tickled her skin, a sensation she never knew she could experience. Time goes by and they have to fly back. But she never wiped off the marks of her little visitors. They visit her every few cycles.

However the good times had to stop. Her children stop visiting her. Never bothered to say “hello” and left her alone. Those were sad times for Mother Moon.

Then out came a projectile out of Earth orbit. For a second Mother Moon was enthralled. “They’re coming to visit! “Oh wait until they see the little things I preserved for them!” she whispered to herself.

But the projectile flew to the other side of the Earth instead of continuing upwards and exploded on the other side of the globe. From the clouds and explosion, many more flew out of it, only to land where the first projectile came.

The clouds got thicker and soon Mother Moon couldn’t see them. Her children were gone. That was the last of what Mother Moon heard of mankind.
